Provincetown has more than 50 art galleries scattered throughout town, which is a designated Massachusetts Cultural District. This is America’s oldest continuous art colony, a wondrous place that inspired such painters as Helen Frankenthaler, Edward Hopper, and Jackson Pollock. It remains an energetic center of creativity to this day.

Start with a visit to the Provincetown Art Association and Museum (PAAM), which has a rotating roster of exhibits as well as works from the center’s 3,000-plus item permanent collection. Then start a gallery stroll to discover the work of mid-career and emerging artists’ alike, in group and solo exhibitions. There’s a wide array of media including photography, sculpture, and digital art. There are too many galleries to name, but you can’t go wrong visiting some of the more established ones, including The Schoolhouse Gallery, Julie Heller Gallery, Rice Polak Gallery, Albert Merola Gallery, and the Cortile Gallery.
