Thanksgiving in Provincetown means its time for the Lighting of the Pilgrim Monument. This year, the festive event happens on November 27th.
Commemorating the landing of the Pilgrims on the Mayflower, and the time the Pilgrims pent in Provincetown and the Outer Cape before sailing onto what is now Plymouth. The Mayflower Compact, one of the first written forms of our modern-day representative form of government, was signed in Provincetown Harbor.
The monument commands a view from High Pole Hill Rd. a dramatic edifice that is the largest all-granite building in the country. On this special night, Provincetown lights up 3,100 individual lights, strung from the top of the monument. They will continue to shine until January 6, 2025.
This cherished event serves two purposes. It commemorates the Mayflower Pilgrims’ arrival in Provincetown. It also brings the community together, to “throw the switch,” illuminating the Monument and celebrating the town we love. With hundreds of attendees expected; DJ Emerson spinning tunes; a cash bar for beer, wine and hard seltzers; and a bake sale for sweets and hot chocolate, this year will be filled with excitement, connection and community spirit.
