Drive the Historic Mt. Washington Auto Road + Bike, Hike and Kayak in New Hampshire’s White Mountains
The Glen House, the award-winning 68-room hotel at the base of Mt. Washington, is perfectly situated for adventures in the White Mountains this summer. The hotel is surrounded by the 800,000 acre White Mountain National Forest and is located at the start of the Mt. Washington Auto Road, which leads to the summit of the highest peak in the Northeast. At 6,288 feet, Mt. Washington offers views of more than 100 miles to the Atlantic Ocean and into neighboring Canada.
The Mt. Washington Auto Road, the most famous mountain drive east of the Rockies, is considered America’s oldest man-made attraction. The eight-mile road opened in 1861 and there is a self-drive option as well as guided van tours that stop at scenic spots along the way. The family-owned Mt. Washington Summit Road Company (MWSRC) has operated the Auto Road since 1906.
The Glen House is offering The Auto Road to the Sky package this summer, a great way to combine outdoor adventure and a legendary drive up Mt. Washington with a stay at the hotel, which was named one of the Top Hotels in New England in the Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards.

Hike, Bike & Kayak the Whites
The Great Glen Trails Outdoor Center, which is also owned by MWSRC, lies just across the road from The Glen House and offers 45 km of trails for walking, hiking and trail biking. The terrain is ranked easy to moderate, and there’s great family trail riding on hybrids, mountain bikes and fat bikes, which can all be rented on site. There are full and half-day guided wildlife kayak tours that offer an opportunity to spot bald eagles, osprey, kingfishers, moose and black bear while paddling on flat water on the nearby Androscoggin River. More adventurous travelers can go on a guided whitewater kayaking excursion and encounter Class II rapids with the aid of ACA certified guides.
Kick Back with Endless Views & Microbrews
After a day of adventures, it’s time to gather around the fire pit on the outdoor patio at The Glen House, which offers panoramic views of the Whites and a perfect setting for sipping local brews like Tuckerman’s Auto Road Ale and Moat Mountain Czech Pilsner. The bar, which was named “The Most Beautiful Bar in New Hampshire” by Architectural Digest, offers a wall of windows with those same staggering mountain views. The Notch Grille restaurant has both indoor and outdoor seating and a comfort food menu ranging from Wild Mushroom Flatbread and Bacon-Wrapped Scallops to Short Rib Grilled Cheese, Roasted Vegetable Ravioli and Blackened Salmon.
Dog-Friendly Rooms
Dogs are always welcome at The Glen House. Just ask for a dog-friendly guest room and bring a loyal four-legged companion along. A nightly pet fee of $20 will be charged, which includes treats for the pup.
